Leges Motus Progress – Chat Log and Refactor
As we count down the tickets to Beta 2 (37 down, about 12 to go, for those keeping track at home), here’s a bit of an update.
I just added a chat log to the game, which was a feature that had been requested a few times and that I think is necessary now that there are messages for every freeze and gate engage/disengage. Basically, the chat log scrolls with the chat, keeping everything that has appeared and allowing you to go back and look at it. (Of course, it doesn’t scroll automatically if you’re looking at something that’s not at the bottom.)
Here’s a screenshot of the chat log in action:
Another group of changes we’ve made (or that are in progress, in some cases) is a set of code refactorings. The GameController class was too big, trying to do too much. I removed the server browser code from it, put it in another class. Archaemic has begun to work on the menus and text input. Although these currently have no outward impact for the user, it will make things more flexible and easier to improve in the future.
I don’t remember if this has been mentioned before, but maps are now sent to the client if it doesn’t have them, so third-party maps will now be playable. However, this does not apply to resources, so this only works (at the moment) if the map is made with the built-in images. We’re working on then saving the downloaded maps and on transmitting resources, so this will change hopefully by beta 3.
That’s all for now.
